History

As with many organisations of a similar nature, the early formative years of the Association are shrouded in the mists of time, people's memories and a paucity of documented evidence.

What is known is that an inaugural meeting was called for the afternoon of 21st January 1956 at Princes Gate, Kensington, London. It was called by Terry Mahoney who was "Honorary Organiser", presumably for archery in the Civil Service. The notice was published in Issue 1 of the "Ascham Review" dated January 1956. Preparation for the inauguration had been in the hands of a Working Party / Shooting Committee consisting of Messrs. H Birch, W Howard, J Kember-Smith, R Laker, and E Mahoney.

Mr Mahoney continued to be the Hon Organiser for some years until the post was abolished in 1962, but he was supported by a Chairman, Secretary / Treasurer and a small committee.

With only one major hiccough, this organisation consisted largely unchanged for many years until the late 1970's when the long serving Alf Webb was unable to continue as Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, Winter Pairs Co-ordinator, Membership Secretary, Tournament Organiser, etc, etc. Gradually, from 1977 the various jobs were transferred until in 1979 Mr Webb was finally able to relinquish the duties of Secretary.

Whilst there have been numerous changes in many of the Officers of the Association, the structure of the Committee created in the years 1977-1979 has survived to the present day.

With that first issue of the Ascham Review was a notice of the First Championship Meeting to be held on the Bank Holiday Monday 6th August that year. Presumably further championships were held each year, but the Ascham Review giving the results for 1960 indicates they were the fourth! This anomaly continues to the present day with the recent Championships in Nottingham being the 43rd.

The Association consists of its members; it is governed by a Constitution which was evolved in the years 1981/2, and after approval by the CSSC, was adopted at the AGM in September 1982. Since that date there have only been minor amendments.
